Porn files... You kids...

But seriously... Technically, anything you delete is still recoverable... There are programs out that that are called File Shredders that try and make the file unrecoverable but even still, there is a possibility it can be recovered until it is overwritten the next time your hard drive goes around and begins to write data again...

What kind of file are you trying to remove from the computer?
A program, something that you had to install? if yes then add remove programs from the control panel.

If its just a music or movie file, something that you dident have to install, then just drag it to the recycle bin, and then empty the recycle bin.. If your looking for a file to make it hard to recover, if say the cops take a look at your PC. Then your stuck... As there are file shredders out there, but that can always be undone... You can make it very difficult to recover a lost file by shredding it..... But since its been placed on the hard drive there will always be a image of it there.. Think of it as a sheet of paper, full of X's when you save a file those x's turn to letters.. when you delete a file it places x's over the letters.

No matter what you do, if you are trying to hide the files from someone who knows what they are doing, they will find it. Unless you want to use a giant magnetized strip to ruin your entire drive...that would work. Lol. Otherwise, you're screwed. If it's your G/f ect you're hiding from, deleting it from the trash should do it. And cover your tracks...like the web page you went to to get it...delete your page history. But if you have passwords saved for certain sites, they might not pop up after that so I hope you remember them all before you do that.

What do you mean? Anyone with the knowledge can find files on your computer even after you format your computer. If you are referring to the average person, what files do you want to delete?

Normal deletion (any OS, Win/Linux/Mac/OS2/BeOS) won't delete the content, overwrite the bits of that content by stuff your hard drive to the brink of capacity, delete those stuffers afterwards.

Run those disk defragment utility may 'accidentally' achieve that overwriting thing.
