both can potentially become good friends. you can't really tell just by their gender. Also, there are different definitions of a good friend...so it's really all up to you.

Personally, I prefer guy friends. They don't talk about you behind your back, and they're the best if you need someone to run to if you just found out that your ex-boyfriend decided to do some kiss and tell on you. =P They give our honest opinions too if you ask them if you look great or if you need a make-over. =P
