Seriously. I want to dive & stay in San Diego & get paid for it. I want the chance to prove myself, just the foot in the door & my dedication & hard work will see me through. Any tips? Names to drop? Trustworthy Hiring companies?

If you're going through a reputable training institution, you ought to have no worries. Most, if not all, will have you hired, before you graduate. Don't stop there. Get your Chamber Medic if you can. High demand currently and any welding and cutting cert is good to start
I was recruited by Quebec Hydro, 3/4 of the way through my course. If you think that by getting your ticket, that it will mean that you can stay local, forget it. You go where the jobs are, not where you want to be. If you can't deal with it, this is not the career path for you. My diving has taken me around the world, until I got back "home" and found a spot with a local company. I worked for them for 5 years, before starting my own biz. No, I won't hire you. I only take on graduates of Seneca's Underwater skills program and that for tender only.
Tips? None. Work your tail off, don't gripe that you stay a tender for months, be on time, don't mess with anyone and if you drop a name, you may as well ask for your air to get turned off. Nobody can stand anyone like that. We'd all be fighting for the compressor switch.
If for some reason, you have a hard time getting a job, you can always try Oceaneering, they pretty well hire anyone, but you'll be stuck in GoM essentially.
