Ah. question is pretty self-explanatory. Which do you prefer?

Personally, it'd have to depend on the quality of the book, how well the loose ends were tied, the closure of relationships, etc.

I prefer fanfiction to the actual work most of the time... merely because... the authors must restrain themselves from publishing anything too shocking, so I believe they censor what they write to fit a wider population. True, there are a lot of fanfiction pieces that are just a waste of time to read, but the truly spectacular ones... are sometimes four times better than the original storyline. They don't have to establish the characters, as they are already well-known... they can sometimes bring attention to relationships that the author did not focus much on... they can go beyond what the author had in mind for characterization. They can let us squealing fangirls have what we want but is never given in a book-- the passionate sidestories that the author never includes.

I don't know... I just think... well-written fanfiction is more emotional than most published prose.

Ah, but there are some authors that can never be outdone by a fanfiction writer-- such as the works of Teresa Medeiros (historical romance novelist) and Anne Rice (author of the vampire series, and the Beauty series)

Opinions? Please don't answer unless you are aware what fanfiction is, and have read a fair share yourself.

As a fellow fanfiction writer myself, I have to say that I almost always prefer fanfiction to published works. Fanfiction is much more versatile because it gives the both the reader and fanfiction writer the opportunity to explore different situations that author never broached in the book itself. Also, fanfiction can be interactive and can combine or retract the components of the novel that a fan either enjoyed or despised.

I agree that on the whole fanfiction is given a bad name by the writers that post poorly written, grammatically incorrect stories. However, even among the badly written writing, a reader can still find a gem of a fanfiction story for their favorite fandom.

Iam a proud fanfiction writer. (If you dont belive me go here:

I think it really depends on the topic that the fanfiction is about. It also depends how well the fanfiction is written. Some are just a disgrace to the original work and some are witty and briliant. Some topics are very boring to read for me (i.e.- HSM). But I have also seen many fanfictions about The Outsiders that show how loving and caring the Curtis brothers are to each others. Whilist some are boring and about some monotonus thing.

The only problem with fanfiction is that for every good story there are twenty poorly written ones. It makes it hard to weed through to find the ones worth reading.

Oh DevoleB. The Caveman likes the ladies and is perfectly complacent with his manhood. There is only room for one penis in my life and that is my own and it is a big one thank you very much. To answer your question, as long as a book is good that is all that really matters. Peace and God bless.
