There is only one widely accepted theory about how the universe began -- the Big Bang theory. It says that the universe started out as a tiny dot smaller than a proton and began expanding outward. It continues to expand today and will probably continue to do so indefinitely. Many years ago there was one other popular theory called The Oscillating Universe. This theory said that the universe had always existed, but that instead of expanding forever it would eventually stop and then collapse back in on itself until another "explosion" occurred and it began expanding again. This cycle would continue forever. There's very little evidence that this theory is the right one, but lots of evidence that the Big Bang theory is.

Well there is nothing like one big theory that satisfies all as for yet. So, basically people consider forces and there interaction with mater as basic defining principles of this universe.
As such, there are four basic forces as known to man:
1. The gravitational force - which is responsible for keeping us down to earth!
2. The electromagnetic force - the force responsible for lighting ur houses and making magnets move.
Almost all daily life phenomena can be explained by just using formula's and equations of these forces.
Apart from these, there are Strong nuclear force(making atom bomb possible) and weak nuclear forces(which give rise to all sort of radiations of atom bomb). At higher level, people were able to show that weak forces and electromagnetic can be combined to one force, but that's another story.
