People's expectations are higher at Christmas and the season can never be all that one wants it to be. Halloween is a fun holiday and people do not expect much of it except to have a good time.

Christmas is very near the darkest day of the year, the Winter Solstice. That might have something to do with it. Things are dark, maybe snowy, and it's stressful to spend a load of cash on presents and have to deal with family get togethers. It has to do with expectations. People know that they are expected to have a happy family moments during the Holidays, but may not have family, or a happy family. They might feel sad and then feel worse when they see how happy other people are, making their own situation seem even starker. In my pagan tradition, it's best to celebrate Yule as a Festival of Lights to welcome the light of the sun back to the world. Halloween is in Autumn, which is always festive for it's harvest festivals and the chill is invigorating and not quite old and irritating yet. You don't have any expectations, for the most part. Kids are expected to dress up and get free candy, both fun things. Older teens and young adults go to parties, go to haunted houses, and see scary movies. All fun things. Adults have many options. They can take their kids out trick-or-treating, stay home to hand out candy, or turn off the porch light and just watch TV specials. Halloween has fewer cultural expectations.

I think some are sad at Christmas because they think of those they love that are now gone or they are lonely & have no one. Some are sad because they cant afford the commercial Christmas.
People are happy on Halloween because its fun. They get to dress up & be a charactor for a night.Kinda like a creative fantasy. And the candy is great too.

You actually bring up a good point. The Christmas season is this most prominent time for ppl to commit suicide. They are reminded of short comings in life or failures possibly. Who knows why some one would do it. When you try to bring family together but there is no family there then what are you going to do?

At Christmas you might not be able to be with your family, but on Halloween you have all these cute kids with big smiles on their faces, it is just fun.

Not everyone is happy on Halloween. I know a few people that don't even celebrate it, for religious reasons.
