If not, how do I know they are a qualified opthamologist?

An opthalmologist is a doctor...who went to college and medical school and then specialized in eye surgery. So, he has an MD after his name.

An optometrist has a DO (Doctor of Optometry) after his name. He attends school for 4 years and does only general eye exams...no surgery!
