"I'm just trying to organize my finances. Do you think we could take care of this?"
Remember, it's your money, so you have every right to ask for repayment. Don't worry about sounding greedy!

Zion, I doubt if this person has forgotten. They probably require some prodding to pry their wallet open. Worst case there hoping you're afraid to ask and will just forget about it.
Being greedy? It's your money and your were gracious enough to offer to lend it. Don't feel your need to apologize to ask for payment. Especially if it's been awhile.
Just be nice but direct, and say something like, Iv'e had some bills come up, and I need you to repay me for that loan now.
Their reply will let you know where you stand. But the subject will be open. Get a definite time, not "Oh soon, or a few days". Then you'll be back where you started. You can work out a payment plan. But, letting them know that it's not an open ended arrangement is the important thing. I hope this helps, and good luck. Charley

Just tell the person gently that you could really use the money owed to you. Why would it sound greedy for you to ask that a debt be repaid?

You wont sound greedy; if he doesn't actively tell you that he'll pay you at some point, then its his fault for not taking responsibility. Before you say good bye to him somewhere, say that,
Before I forget, remember that time I paid for you? Yea, just a reminder.
If its a closer friend, just say "Yo, you still owe my 10 dollars. dont forget"

maybe subtly bringing up the situation in which caused them to borrow money will somewhat remind them that they owe you?

Threaten them with a slap to the face, then say where's my money *****!!? You better pay up or pay the price!.....Let them know that you are in charge and that there will be penalties if they don't pay you.
