The Group of Seven was a collection of Canadian Artists who formed a coalition in the early 20th century. Their membership changed over the years, and eventually they began showing their work together as the Canadian Group of Painters. The original 7 all began their careers as commercial artists, but got together to paint outdoors - and recorded some wonderful Canadian landscapes in a style the was unaccepted in North America at that time - Impressionism. They were frowned upon as their style was, at that time, not "mainstream". Mostly they painted "plein air" - outdoors in the elements.

Their artistic courage - that to break the mold of what was currently in vogue - historically put Canadian artists as well as landscape painting - especially in Canada - on the map for all time.

Their work is fantastic - if you've never heard of them, please take the time to look up some of their work... it is truly inspiring.

Well, see, there's exactly seven of them. That's pretty unusual, I think.
