I asked this same question a few weeks back, and got some very interesting answers. Before reading the informed answers of people who were in the military, or ex-military, I was leaning toward the idea that compulsory service would benefit our society. After the reasoned arguments on both sides, I opted to go along with the people who said no. Though I do believe that citizens should perform some sort of service to the country, be it civil service or military before going to university. It would enhance their education and lessen the sense of entitlement that so many people have.

Why? Conscription is used when a country is at war with another country that is trying to take over. I don't see this being the case with the US or Canada.
Also, the US military is huge! so why do they need more? I know the Canadian military is lacking but there isn't funds for more troops and currently they are turning away all but the most desirable candidates... Only those with experience in their field or degrees are being admitted for anything more than a cook.
So, my answer is a resounding no.

NO! No conscription without subscription!
Well... Unless our first mission is to take out the terrorist ringleader in that foreign country known as DC...

Emphatically no. My brother, who was a US Navy submariner, used to say that he really wanted to know the other people on his sub were there by choice. I think that's a fairly common feeling in the US military.
