You can sign him up for a surf camp at the Eli Howard Surf School by the Cardiff/Encinitas area ($300 for a 5-day camp, for kids age 6 and up). They provide the surfboard and wetsuit, so all you need to bring is a swimsuit, towel, and sunblock. They have a day camp scheduled for Aug. 28-Sept. 1, but if you're interested in signing your son up, I'd suggest calling in advance (760-809-3069) to check availability.

This one is nice because it's designed specifically for kids, rather than all age groups, so it might be fun for him.
