let's say you and a friend have something funny happen and then you meet up with someone else.Something comes up that's relevant to the joke from earlier, so you and the first friend start laughing. When the third person says what's so funny?, you might tell them it's an inside joke, because it's really only funny to you and the first person because of your other experience. (it may not be as funny when retold to the third) That's just an example. It can be like someone else mentioned, a secret joke, or something that happened...
