"An inside joke is a joke that not everyone will get. You need "inside" information in order to understand the reference that makes it funny. That might not actually be why it's called that, but really, it's as good an explanation as any. The truth is a matter of plausibility."

a joke that refers back to a funny situation that a person telling the joke to another person would not make sense without knowing the story of what happened earlier.
example: my being mad at work so many people asked me about yoga one night and my friend being there and we laugh about it. The inside joke would be: my friend the next week holding up a dvd on yoga without saying a word to me. Makes sense to me but not to the person standing with us who doesn't know the story.

It's a joke that only a few people understand for whatever reason. For example, in my family, if someone says, "Do you smell potatoes?" we all say, "Sometimes!" and start laughing. No one else understands what we are laughing at or even thinks it's funny, but because it is an "inside joke," my faily thinks it is hilarious!

Is like for example you're listening the radio and the DJ and some other people in the station start to laugh and you don't know the reason and is a joke among them that you don't know because you aren't there.

A phrase or comment that would be meaningless to someone outside a relatively small circle of people.
In my school the phrase, "the bird has flown" was a laugh riot but most wouldn't even chuckle over it.
