discovery of india by nehru gives u a nice idea about the veda's,upanishad's and how the indian people perceive them in day-to-day life.how we came to be ourselves over time. "India: From Midnight to the Millennium" by shashi taroor is a good book about post-independence india.'shantaram' gives u a good picture of present bombay, 'a suitable boy' by vikram seth is a good one. and for more extensive reading we has our own R.K NAARAYAN. he is a class apart. his novels make me proud that i am from rural india

but a must to understand the
extremely rich history of India
is THE RAJ. The BBC made
a wonderful miniseries years
back. If you can afford it get in
DVD. You won't regret it.
