We have a lot of hard clay soil in the Phx area. I use gypsum to soften the soil in grassy areas. Couldn't hurt to mix in some sand - it makes sense. Fertilizer? Can't beat natural steer manure.

Put in your household garbage; banana peels, potato peels, etc.
Don't put dairy, meat, or bones, or seeds (squash, muskmelon, etc) in it though.
Ask a farmer for some old manure to mix in.
