A web browsers main function is to download and translate code into web pages. It requests the code from a server, accepts the code for the page and then uses it's own programming to determine how to display that code. To get an idea of just what it does right-click on a page and select the "view source" option. What you see there is the code that is sent to your browser. Your browser just knows what it all means so you get what you're expecting.
The two most common web browsers now are Internet Explorer and Firefox. Some others are Lynx, Opera, and Netscape.
