Both of my daughters started walking around furniture at 8 months and walking at 9. I have heard that boys average is later than girls. As with most things with children there is a very wide range that is considered normal between 9 and 12 months. It is not that unusual for an otherwise normal child to start walking as late as 18 months.
There are lots of things to take into consideration, if your baby is heavy it may be harder to walk, or if he had a late start rolling or crawling. Also if he was premature you would need to consider his adjusted age (how old he would be had he been full term).
If you are concerned ask your pediatrician.

You neglected to mention your child's age. In any case, a normal range for walking is from 10 months to 18 months. Even a 20 month walker is considered inside the "normal" range (however, slow), but by 22 months, they are considered delayed if they are not walking. Cruising (what he's doing along the furniture) is the stage just prior to walking.

Depends on the child as well as how much encouragement you give him to do so.

I have a cousin who walked on her own at 9 months, but that is really kind of early. Most children start letting go of furniture and other "crutches" somewhere between 10 months and 15 months.

Above all, don't despair if your child is a bit slower, or revel that he is an early walker. Just enjoy the trip. Raising children is so much fun. Enjoy!!!

many people say a year---but i read that the average age a child starts to actually walk on his own (letting go and walking steps) is 14 months. this seems true because i know a lot of kids that walk after a year---and even by 16 months. every child will approach this differently. a lot has to do with their temperament. for ex--cautious, adventerous...etc. making their learning process unique. my daughter started crawling at 7.5 months, could stand and let go by 9 months, cruised til 12 months and started walking. now, my second--a boy--started to crawl at 6 months, he was pulling up immediately after, and was walking by 10 months. my youngest is following the same pattern as my second. he's 9.5 months now---and has let go a couple time--attempting some steps. actually, enjoy the time----the next phase when they are toddling all over is CRAZY!

I don't think there is a "normal" age - they do it when they are ready. Mine walked a few days after his first birthday, but I have a friend whose child walked at eight months! Just have you and your husband encourage the child to take a step or two towards you, and try it over and over. One good thing to try is to sit on a carpeted floor - you on one side, your husband about six feet away on the other, and make a game out of having the child go back and forth.

I too, was 19 when I had my son. It's fun, but very very busy.

My son walked, like with furniture, or what they call cruising, around 10-12 months. My daughter walked by herself at around 10 months. But I think anywhere from 9-14 months is on average of walking. So he sounds right on track!

Stay strong and raise your baby right! You are doing a great job asking lots of questions. That's the key! :)

The norm is 9months - 18 months with an average at 13. My daughter was 15 when she started to walk. As long as the baby is either crawling, scooting, schooching etc and they seem physically fine there should be no worries. Let it happend when they are ready.

Good Luck :-)

Im 20 my daughter is my first..shes now 15 months

she began "cruising(hanging onto furniture and moving around the room)" at about 7-8 months...and was fully walking/running by her 1st birthday.

every baby is different though. they all progress on different levels.

My husbands cousin has a baby whos a few months younger then ours..she isnt even crawling yet! and she cant even hold her bottle or feed herself/eat solids(like cheerios/the gerber puffs)

My first one started walking at 8 months and my second started walking at 9 months. I've seen some that don't start walking until there 15 months or older. It just depends on the baby I guess. But don't worry if you little one doesn't start walking early, it doesn't mean there is anything wrong, he/she is just not ready yet. When they get ready they'll start on their own. And then, you'll be wanting to tie them down to something just to be able to keep up with them, lol.
