No disadvantages other than speed of USB 2.0. Firewire is way faster. USB will be a lot slower access than having the drive in the case. Not familiar with AStone. Be sure that the enclosure will talk to drive over 200 gigs. Many cheap ones will not.

An exterior enclosure is transportable. you may plug it into any laptop with a nicely suited peripheral (USB, eSATA, Firewire, etc). once you plug the enclosure right into a various laptop for the 1st time, you may make optimistic that laptop is on line so it may acquire the right drivers. If the exterior enclosure does no longer look on a working laptop or laptop suitable away: bypass away the enclosure plugged into the laptop, make optimistic the enclosure is grew to become on (if it has a skill swap), and then reboot the laptop. Edit: No you won't be able to set up an working device on an exterior no longer easypersistent. It won't paintings. you may open the laptop case and plug that no longer easypersistent into the motherboard at present with a SATA cable (and a SATA skill plug). Then in the process boot you may direct the laptop to start which comprise your no longer easypersistent.

I don't see any disadvantages. Get a good enclosure, with a well-regarded HDD to install, and it's a great way to store lots of data and is easily transported from one pc to another.
Do a search for "HDD enclosure review" and you'll get lots of choices to read. Good luck.
