Bleach or should I say chlorine is one of the most widely used and abundant chemical manufactured by man. Did you know the "Bleach" is only a 5% solution of chlorine. Chlorine is a common chloride ion found in sea salt. It is extracted by a number of methods but most commonly, electrolysis. The reason it cleans and disinfects is because when added to common water it turns to hypochlorous and hydrochloric ACID. In direct sunlight it loses a lot of the hypo. So, your actually cleaning with hydrochloric acid when using bleach. Its also the irritation you get in the eyes when using it, the chlorine gas emmitted from the solution reacts with the moisture on your eyes and creates this hydrochloric acid on the surface. Don't fret, its the most commonly added chemical to minicipal drinking water as a disinfectant. In very pure concentrations it is deadly. It is a wonderful cleaning and disinfecting agent and yeah, I like the smell too!

I love bleach. I worked in a State Institution for years. Then it was the only known disinfectant that killed H I V , then we could not use it for some reason anymore.
I know equate the smell of bleach with really germ free, clean!
I think it is a great idea,
with 2 exceptions;
1. No mixing with other chemicals, especially ammonia chemicals.
2. If you have a septic system, be careful how much bleach actually goes down the drain, It will kill the good bacteria in the system!
After those two warnings...Go for IT!

Depends on what you clean. It can damage fabrics, some vinyl countertops, and some flooring. It can also cause a reaction in certain metals like tin. So long as you have used it before and not had anything happen to your surfaces, then I would only worry about the chemical reactions. Look it up on the clorox website, they will probably have all the metals listed. Oh yeah, and don't use very hot water with it. It makes hydrochloric acid if the water is hot enough. This can hurt you by touching or breathing it.

I do this every now and then in the kitchen and bathroom areas. I definately agree with others about not mixing chemicals, even dish soap (which is pretty easy to do in the kitchen..if you've just washed dishes, etc.)
My neighbor always used to mix dish soap and bleach, I never in my life understood how she didn't get sick or anything.
I learned it was bad purely by accident, when I was in the emergency room waiting on the doctor(I later found out I had phnemonia)sp? Anyway, two women were in there and one was groaning and moaning and wheezing and at times, screaming. There was just that little curtain thing between us so it was really freaking me out! LOL!!! Anyway, because you can hear through the little curtain, I overheard the doctor ask her friend what happened. "We are cleaning out this old house, and we wanted to get it clean fast, so we mixed bleach with dish soap to clean everything with." The doctor was like, "NO!!!!! Don't ever do that!!!!!" It ended up buring her windpipe and lung passages. I felt so bad for her, she was definately hurting and it sucked because there was nothing I could do for her. So, I learned vicariously not to mix bleach with ANYTHING.
I do it about once a week, because I too fear the supergerms! LOL! It's just like antibiotics can get immune to bacteria and viruses, could you imagine things that were immune to bleach? WOAH!!! LOL!! ;) SD

It is the most effective disinfectant. I even put a few drops in the dish washing water about once a month. But there are some things that you really can't use chlorine bleach on, and then you have to do the next best thing. But what the next best thing is is another question. *winks*

Absolutely. Just remember that bleach, well...bleaches stuff. Also the fumes are strong. If you mix it with ammonia, it creates a toxic gas, so be careful! I like Clorox Clean-Up for my general cleaning.

i used to clean with bleach until someone told me to start cleaning wiht peroxcide it does the same thing bleach does as far as disinffecting and making things smell fresh but it doesnt bleach the colors out of stuff and it doesnt have that strong smell that bleach has and it is cheaper and is nontoxic for the little ones.
