First, to correct some mistakes in previous answers, Cleopatra was not the first female ruler in Egyptian history. There were queens who ruled in their own right or as regents for young sons as early as the Old Kingdom. The first woman who declared herself "king" was Hatshepsut in the 18th Dynasty.
Cleopatra can perhaps be credited with a role in the rise of the Roman Empire and the end of the Republic. Her support for Julius Caesar with the wealth of Egypt, particularly gold and grain allowed his own power to rise within Roman politics. Her similar support for Marc Anthony after the death of Caesar and her contribution to the in-fighting among the triumvirate ruling Rome at the time could by some be seen as inadvertantly aiding Octavian (later Caesar Augustus) in his own rise to become the first Emperor of Rome.
She was a major player on the world stage and her failure to defeat the forces of Rome led to the formal annexation of Egypt into the Roman Empire.
In later history, she's served as a major subject in numerous works of art - paintings, poems, plays, novels, films, etc. People remain fascinated by her story.

Well she was the most powerful female figure in all of Egypt. She had many affairs and she died suddenly of a self inflicted snake bite. She was a ruler, sinner, and a role model for ancient Egypt. People admired her and despised her. I watched Austin Stevens Snakemaster on Animal Planet about the snake who killed Cleopatra. It was pretty obvious it was a King Cobra.
Glad I could help!

She was , first and foremost, an Egyptian patriot of the ruling class. She was greek in ancestry, descended from the Ptolemy's, a family of one of Alexander the Great's generals. she knew that Egypt was militarily weak and so seduced Caesar, correctly surmising that he was the Alpha male of the Roman Empire. When he was assassinated, she grieved, but moved on picking a less capable man, Antony, who still almost delivered to her an independent Egypt. She chose suicide over being a trophy of Octavian, who, it is suspected had her (and Caesar's) son Caesarion executed.
