Because, on earth anyway, the elements that effect time - gravity, accelleration, etc. - are unchanging and therefore linear.

depends on how you view time, physically or philisophically, but physically it's all linear because it's all one piece, we break time in to manageable pieces like eons, millenia, centuries, decades, years, months, weeks, days, hours, seconds, and so on, but time is al one piece, like an atom, or even better what we originally thought an atom was, a small hard round sphere that was completely unbreakable, we're just shooting down it, because it looks more like an infinitely long steel rod.
Besides, and now it gets fun, if time wasn't linear there's the chance it would cross itself and rip existence apart, supposing it has a "mind" it wouldn't let itself happen, but time is an insanely complex thing, to understand and still the most mysterious frontier.
Then there are those who will say I am entirely wrong and that time is NOT linear and that time trabvel is possible and all that other bullshit, but what can I say, I'm determined not to believe that because I don't see how it's possible.

It's a dimension. Length is linear, Width is linear, Height is linear, Time is ??? Continue the pattern, time is linear. What do you expect it to be?

look at a line . .. it goes left and right .. or up and down . .whatever . .it goes infinitely in one direction and infinitely in the other direction . with time you have the PAST and the FUTURE with the present sandwiched in between . .. . . you can go back in time or forward in time . . . like a timeline. .. .you can't go any other way . .it's linear . .
make any sense??
