Good luck, whatever you do!

An art degree should be put to use. If this is something you enjoy and you have the retail skills, I think you should check on a job that you are the purchaser of fine arts. A lot of people have someone to purchase there art for them. Also an auction company that would sell high dollar art needs someone to purchase art for them. You can also think of being a art teacher. Try art teacher while you are still working your current job just to catch up on bills and when it kicks off really good tell the devil you work for to take the job and shove it you ain't working there anymore. Good Luck

since your art degree (is that a 4 year degree? BS, BA?) is only good in art, and the field of art doesn't pay that well, why not go back to school and specialize.(1 or 2 years of school) or take some 14 week courses in some direction either toward art or in another area. Art now has been converted to "design" on the net so maybe you might want to take computer related courses.

I made the transition like this:
crappy retail job $5/hr
crappy retail job $6/hr
customer service/reception at a car dealership (kind of sales-related) $7/hr
customer service for AAA call center (kind of vehicle-related) $7.75/hr
waitressing (learned how to hustle) $4/hr +tips
assistant project management for a steel fabrication company (part customer service, part hustle, part lackey, gained lots of office experience) $8/hr to $11/hr over 3 years
sales rep for manufacturing supply company (all hustle, no pay) $7/hr + nonexistent commission
legal secretary (mostly hustle and office skills-intensive) $10/hr to $13.33/hr over 3 years
to ... ta-da
Project Manager for a granite & marble fabrication company. Can't disclose my pay but it's more than three times my first retail job pay per hour, and I have a flexible schedule!
Don't just blindly jump out of retail. Determine what you want, then sidestep your way to it.
Good luck and happy interviewing.

Research the cultural and arts institutions in your community. Find one that you like the most and see if there are any jobs available. If there are no jobs, squeeze in some volunteer time at that institution. While volunteering, get to know the decision makers and demonstrate your ability to add value to the organization. After you prove yourself and made some tangible contributions to the organization, then explain your interest in turning your volunteer work into a full-time job with this organization. Best of luck to you!

You can become a teacher. All states now have shortages of teachers and anyone with a Bachelor's degree can now sign up to teach immediately. Go to the main school district office in your city or town and ask them how someone with a Bachelor's degree can start teaching. You'll attend an orientation and shadow a teacher. They require you get a background and fingerprint check first!
good luck!

Put in applications for other types of work while continuing to work for Satan until something comes up.
You didn't say how long you've been in retail, but I have 30 years experience. You either love it or hate it, there's no in between.
Get out of it as soon as you can find another job. And work there while persuing your love of art.
