Cramps are strong prolonged contractions of the muscular wall of the uterus. These may be caused by concentration of prostaglandins (hormones found in the cervix and uterus). Research shows that women with dysmenorrhea produce and excrete more prostaglandins than those who don't have as much discomfort.

As everyone has already said, cramps are caused by uterine contractions. When I was a kid I use to get such bad cramps that I couldn't even go to school. Back then I would take Midol or Tylenol but nothing touched the pain. Eventually I was put on birth control which seem to really control the cramps. Now that I'm an adult I know the secret to controlling cramps. IBUPROFIN. 600-800 milligrams to start and then 200-400 milligrams every 4-6 hours. I have endometrosis, so severe cramps are a way of life for me. Nothing works better that Ibuprofin. My daughter already has the same problem as me. At least she won't have to suffer like I did.

menstrual cramps are actually uterine contractions. The same kind youll feel when in labor...only 100 times worse. The reason why is the uterus contracts to expel the lining of the uterus it built up in case fertilization took place. When it doesnt, the lining is shed by means of a period. The uterus has to contract to force the remnants out.

If you mean menstrual cramps, it's because the lining of your uterus is shedding. That's why you bleed. So your uterus has to contract to shed the lining. Cramps are just contractions.
It's been said that having an orgasm can help with the pain because it makes your uterus contract even more.
