How do you know you're crying in your sleep? Is someone watching you? If you're crying & can't sleep OR crying yourself to sleep it's possible it's depression.

Are you happy when you are awake. If you cry sometimes but mainly in your sleep perhaps your subconscious is using sleeptime to to relieve the stress of the day but since its during sleep I wouldn't worry about it. If you are by chance sad a lot when you aare awake then go see your family doctor. They can do wonders for depression nowadays. Clinical depression is a imbalance of the brain chemistry and all thats needed is medication with Serotonin to bring balance to the brain. Don't worry about the crying sometimes in your sleep.

No it is possible that in your dreams you are reliving a sad or terrible event that happened in your past. I had that happen to me all the time.
I was hurt by someone for a long time when I was little. I would relive the events in my sleep and start sobbing hysterically. My husband would have to wake me to get me to stop crying. I would remember what I was dreaming
about when he would wake me. I would have these dreams a couple times a month for fifteen years. When the person who hurt me died I stopped having the dreams.

This is a extreme way to relieve stress. Your body does this to heal itself. Have you ever had a body massage by somone you were not attracted to? something non sexual and they massaged your stomach during the middle of the day. See if you get the same response.

i have had experiences like this before.
its not necessarily because you are depressed
it all depends on the specific point in your life when it happens.

i cried in my sleep a few times when i was going through a hard time in my life.
i was dreaming a bad dream related to my on-going life crisis, and i cried so hard that i woke myself up.

also, it happened to me when i was just having a nightmare. nothing more.
