I'm just wondering what I should do about one of my coworkers. She's black, and some of our customers are really prejudiced and totally ignore her when she's trying to help them. Instead, the come to me or one of the other white employees- even if it's obvious we are swamped with work.
This really hurts my coworker's feelings- she is very saddened and offended.
Is there anything I can do? I don't know what to say to her, except "Sorry. That's too bad."
oh, and for the record- she's the best worker in the place!! (I always screw up the cash registers)

I would tell people when they approach me 'sorry i'm unable to help at the moment but .......over there can' and point too her. You'll probably find people will go to her because they don't want to appear racist even if they are.

Perhaps you can try telling the customer that you are very busy right now but ? will be more than happy to help you. Then continue with what you were doing in the first place.

You can't force the customers to behave. Support your co-worker.

There's very little you can do but be sympathetic. She has doubtless lived with this her whole life and has by now developed her own coping mechanisms.
