The story is about 500 words long, and about a young man who tries to outwit, escape the devil, only to meet up with the devil in Sumaria. Who wrote this short story?

You're looking for "An Appointment In Samarra," by W. Somerset Maugham. It was written in 1933. It's not the devil, it's death. Does that help?
