Outside the United States there is little difference because regardless of the subtle differences in their platform they are in lock step when it comes to things like promoting capitalism, expanding economy, etc.

We in the United States have a 2 party system where the smaller parties cannot alter policy to a great degree, whereas come other countries have a system by which many parties share control.

Because theirs is a multi-paty system, each party brings into the policy debate their own party's beliefs- since these beliefs are more varied and less mainstream we consider the variety in the politics of these countries to be broader, with more opportunity for divergent opinions.

In our 2 party system there is less opportunity for divergent opinions, and though the 2 parties disagree about some core things, when you look at them in a global view they essentially hold the same view about America.

Anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't have enough of a global understanding of politics to see why they're wrong.

Both are non-ideological coalitions, with no fixed policies. The various factions and interest groups that form the two coalitions are constantly jockeying for position, with the biannual primary elections serving as a sort of end of term exam.

So the only real, permanent difference is that Democrats are not Republicans, and vice versa. Everything else is subject to change without notice.

There didn't used to be that much difference and honestly there probably isn't that much today either, but the media has fostered these base caricatures of both parties and successfully divided us almost as badly as the Civil War. Of course in those days it was the Republicans who were the Liberals.

The main difference is how they view the government's responsibilities. liberals think the government should take care of everyone in the social aspect i.e. wellfare, medicare, the economy. this leads to a need for high taxes, while conservatives believe that the people should take care of themselves and try to be as independant of the government as possible. liberals lean towards a more socialist economy and society, while conservatives lean towards free market.

Democrats: Tax & Spend. Leaves you a bit on the poor side, but with little debt.

Republicans: Borrow & Spend. Leaves you with a bit more cash in your pocket, but with crushing debt to pay.

One possesses a spine and a sense of personal responsibility and independence, while the other prefers passivity, short-sightedness and reliance on government to solve what ails us (How wrong and naive can one be?).

Democrats are soft on terror, crime, want to tell you how to run your life, and want you to send your money to Washington for them to spend. Republicans, in theory, are 180 degree opposite, but unfortunately, of late, don't have the backbone to stand up for what they supposedly believe in.
