Most dealers are nice enough to tell you who minted them and when. Be careful about selling them, however, since some dealer are less than honest. Just get some information from them, and do some research for yourself as to what they are worth. If they are not US, then check out from the library the Catalog of World Coins and look them up. If they are US, check out the Catalog of US Coins, (the Redbook). Always remember that grade is VERY important, and you must be honest with yourself on how well they grade to determine their worth.
By the way, very old is very relative. I have hundred of coins over 2000 years old, and most aren't worth very much! Age isn't that important with coins.

Most coins newer than 500 years old tend to have dates on them.
If you have some undated ancient coins, you should probably get them appraised by an expert, as scams abound, and they may be fake.
