I am considering taking a trip to Hawaii by myself. Have never been there before. Would like some good input as to which island would be the best (am thinking about Oahu) for a solo traveler, which areas, what hotels, activities, etc. and whether this is a good location for a woman to be travelling by herself?

come to Maui and stay at one or several of the Hostels, they are great, clean and fun.
You do not say how old you are. But the Hostels are good for all ages. Many have day trips to other parts of the island.
Another way to have a great safe fun filled time? Contact the Church you go to, see if they have locations in Hawaii, Contact them, have them sit you up with a member close to your age.
Meet wonderful people and have fun.
See the Islands from a local point.

First, Have a wonderful time!!! Additionally, make your plans thru' a well known agent. Stay at a well respected, well lit, centrally located hotel. I really enjoyed staying in Honolulu near the Central Market area...(.I think it has a similar designation). If you are centrally located you can walk to many attractions, and the bus system was fair. If you would like to take a more extensive (and expensive) tour, you can get more islands in your trip. Be sure to leave enough time for each island. (You don't want to do the 'If it's Tuesday, it must be Belgium' thing.) One to two islands in a week is plenty. Five islands in eight days and you won't remember which was what. Take LOTS of pictures. Be sure you label each role or storage unit with the places/dates. When you get home you may not remember any more than it wasn't Egypt. Ask other travelers, the locals -especially, what they like to do...where they go to eat, etc. If you go out at night, WATCH YOUR (food and) DRINKS!!! Do not go to places 'off the beaten track' at night (or alone during the daytime). Be sure someone always knows where you are. Those rules are for ANYWHERE, at home or on vacation. (Probably even if you were 90 and as ugly as sin homemade.) Do not wear or carry flashy jewelry, or large amounts of cash, use travel checks and you don't need a lot of jewelry - some of the loccal 'Hawaiian Style' stuff is really lovely and fun...Besides a lei is lovely. There is a swapmeet at the ? Aloha Bowl? check it out (locals can give you correct location and maybe directions) If you are an Auto Club member get all the maps, places to go and stuff to do, from them. Get it well ahead of time so you can plan, anticipate and enjoy. You will need at least a couple of swim suits, shorts, tops, skirts that take up little room and can be interchangeable. Take half what you think you want. (If you roll the clothes up they use lots less room) The have LOTS of wonderful shops and Better Yet!! outlets! Be sure to check the yellow pages and the white ones too. It is very beautiful. Put your toiletries, makeup, shampoo etc, in two or three ziplocks for safely. Don't get so involved with rush-rush that you don't take some time to just 'veg'. If you are easily sunburned, or even if not, be sure to use the highest SPF on the market. That tropical sun is MUCH stronger than a mainlander is used to. Most of all, have a wonderful, wonderful time. Aloha!

Go to Maui. It is very relaxed and beautiful with lots to do. A friend once told me that Waikiki beach is 40% cigarette ash. There are a lot of sites to see on Oahu, but they are in general more amenable to being with someone. Examples are the Polynesian Cultural Center, the Punchbowl and the Arizona Memorial. Maui is much more laid back. Yes, it is good for a lone woman.

Oahu is good. There is accommodation in Waikiki to suit all pockets. Trip round the Island, especially the North Shore where the surfing is, is a must. Also not far from Waikiki is a bay where you can walk in amongst the fish.
