Disk Fragmentation:
When your computer uses the hard drive it gets messy. If stuff's deleted there's a gap that something else writes in. Defragging is like going into a library, grabbing all the pages to a book, sticking them back together and putting all the books in order.
Viruses: Mini programs that come in and spread. Some just take up all available room, some try to watch what you're doing and report back to their creator, some will destroy your computer, and some will make your computer into a zombie - out of your control.
Ad-ware: Imagine someone coming into your house and pasting ads over everything. Refusing to leave on their own, they're a pain in the ****. Your computer's working at doing things that you didn't ask it to do... you're interrupted in what you're doing by a pop-up in the face.
All of the above slow down your computer.
You can speed up your view of the internet by not using Internet Explorer. Why?
Internet Explorer is big, slow, insecure (if you use it you're almost guaranteed to have some viruses and spyware right now), very out of date, and not customizable at all.
Drop Internet Explorer from use and get Firefox - sleek, fast, safe, easy to use, up to date, extremely customizable, built in po-up blocker, hundreds of add-ons available... and it has a cool icon.
( Firefox web browser - http://getfirefox.com/ )
Firefox has pop-up blocking built in, and with just one add-on you'll rarely see another banner ad!
(Firefox adblocking add-on - http://adblockplus.org/ )
Download a few anti-virus and anti-spyware programs, oh and a firewall.
( Avg antivirus - http://free.grisoft.com/ , Adaware anti-adware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ , Spywareblaster antispyware - http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html , Zonealarm firewall - http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp )
A firewall is like a bouncer for a club. It only lets in stuff it knows is ok, and the same with letting things out. It's a very needed security addition.
Install the programs and scan your computer. You might want to stay offline for this - you're not protected until AFTER you do it.
After that - password protect your computer account. If you use a wireless connection see if you can get it secured (passwords and encryption)
Make sure to update your virus and spyware scanners once a week, and check for updates to your firewall... and operating system.

Disk fragmentation occurs if you are constantly installing and uninstalling programs and creating and deleting files. The programs and files fill the first available space and so on. As time goes by a file could be scattered into two or more different parts. It will take longer for the system to read the file thus slowing down the computer. Defragmentation is the process of putting the files together and arranging them neatly.
Unistall unwanted programs. Don't store too many files on your system especially music and picture files. Increase the memory. If you are running Windows XP you need at least 512MB though the suggestions is 256MB.

Hard disks are divided into equal sized sections, generally 4096 bytes. If you make a file on your computer of only 2 bytes, it fills the whole section, because nothing else except that file can be written there. If you make a many megabyte file it will use many sections. When hard disks are first used by installing an operating system and files, everything is arranged in neat sequential sections. If you delete a file, it leaves empty sections. If the next file you make is to big to fit that section, part of it is put there and the rest is put in the next open section. One defragmented file does not a problem make, but many fragmented files make the computer work harder to find all the parts of programs and files, hence it gets slower. When you run disk defragmenter, it gathers all the parts of all the files that are scattered all over the drive and lines them up in neat rows again.

Over a period of time your hard drive becomes cluttered. By this I mean that the data stored on the hard drive has been put out there in a helter skelter manner. Thus the disk becomes fragmented. Parts of a particular program can be scattered all over the drive. So when you run the program to defrag the hard drive it will take each individual flolder and collect all of its data from all over the hard drive and put it back in order. It will accomplish this for each folder or program that is on the hard drive. When you hard drive becomes 80 percent fragmented then the system starts to slow down . This is the time to run the defrag program. It takes about 20 to 45 minutes to accomplish this depending on the size of your disk.

Disk Defragmenter is a utility that repairs fragmented files on your hard drive. If a file is fragmented it takes your computer longer to access the complete file because it's in several locations on the drive.
There are both software and hardware methods of increasing your computer'sspeed.
In terms of software, keeping your machine "clean" of speed-sapping virus and malwares is important. I also recommend System Mechanic software that has various scans that allows you to tweak your system for optimal performance. It is very easy to use and will allow you to get rid of "junk files " that are cluttering up your computer.
To increase your speed once again, you can add more RAM (memory) to your machine.
You didn't specify how you connect to the internet, but if it's by modem, get your ISP (Internet Service Provider) to help you configure your modem for optimal speed. There are settings, modes, and "inet strings" that can help.

the Disk Defragmenter gets rid of any space with corrupted (broken) files or fragments from used programs or things that could be moved to different places to make less folders and easier browsing

Disk defragment = reorganizes your files. Click start>programs>accessories>system tools>click disk defragmenter. But you could try maintenance wizard which will clean up old files, repair hard drive and do disk fragment with one click. start>programs>accessories>system tools>maintenance wizard. Peace!
