The absolute best personal lubricant I have found are the silicone based ones. They are super slick, they tend to last longer than water-based lubes, they do not get sticky like a lot of water based lubes. While they tend to be more pricey than water based lubes, the cost evens out in the fact that you do not have to use as much or reapply as often. Silicone based lubes also make a fantastic massage oil.
I have tried all of the following brands and find no real significant difference in them other than cost. I am also including the website addy where I buy my lube on-line at a pretty significant price difference than buying them retail.

I use Astroglide ( water based ) for a few reasons.... its easy to find, you can buy it almost anywhere including wal-mart and drug stores... its not expensive in in the long run compared to some others after you pay either for shipping or to drive around town to hunt some down.. you dont have to order it and wait for it to be shipped to your or drive all over town trying to find a place that has it in stock.. you can get 5 ounces for about 10-12 bucks... it works well.. a little bit goes quite a ways...

Try the new self-warming KY.
Never use Vaseline or other oil based products with a condom. Oil based lubes are a condoms worst enemy, doomed to failure of the condom.

Spit, lotion, try shampoo, my husband says rub 'er down with a stick of butter, he also recommends olive oil. It does sort of matter what you are going to lube though.
