The whole case is based on a misunderstanding regarding what constitutes residency. I have no past criminal record, not even as much as a driving ticket and I'm gainfully employed. The charge is a felony offense ( Va. Code 24.2-1016). What do you think would be a likely sentence if convicted?

The first thing that comes to mind is a promotion in the Republican party.

But I would say a fine and probation ( but that is my opinoin)

The code section you were charged with is called a Class 5 felony. A Class 5 felony is punishable by "a term of imprisonment of not less than one year nor more than 10 years, or in the discretion of the jury or the court trying the case without a jury, confinement in jail for not more than 12 months and a fine of not more than $2,500, either or both"

You might be able to negotiate a plea to a lesser charge. You should contact a local criminal defense attorney right away.

Nothing happened to Ann Coulter....maybe you should write a book bashing the 9/11 widows and you'll get off too.

Seriously though, I don't know your answer. You should consult an attorney.

Plea it down from felon if you can. Pretty sure you can get jail time if they don't like you.(couple years)

Otherwise, you'll probably get a hefty fine and some limited jail time like 30-90 days, subtracting any time served already.

Also, you'll be a felon - which may take away your right to vote.
There's irony... Sorry...
(Some states let felon's vote. Some don't.)
