Truck driver is an honorable trade, and provides well for many and their families. Depending upon where you live and what you haul, a driver can easily earn $45,000 up to $83,000 or more a year. But to make the real good money there are some trade-offs.
If you haven't any truck experience, I recommend that you find a REPUTABLE Truck Driving School and enroll.
The cost will be anywhere from $3,000. up to $6,500 for the course, and most will take credit cards, or offer third-party financing.
It should take you anywhere from 4 weeks to 8 weeks, depending on the school's curricula, and at the end of the class, most will take you to the DMV and see that you get your pre-trip, air brake 5-point, and drive test. If you pass all of them, you will leave with your CDL.
Most schools will want you to come to class with your DOT medical form and card (go to a Doc-in-The-Box- $50- $75) and your learner's permit for the class (go to DMV and gather the study materials and take all the written tests) vehicle they will train you in.
I recommend you also take all of the written endorsements tests (doubles/triples, hazmat, etc) at the time you take your written exam to get your permit. It is usually a bit cheaper at DMV that way, and you have all of the written testing out of the way.
Most schools have companies constantly recruiting their graduates, so you should be able to go right to work. You most likely will not go to work in the best looking or the finest piece of equipment the company has. You have to earn your way up to that.
The school cannot act as an employment agency, they can only refer you to those companies who have shown an interest in students.

Good Luck and Happy Motoring

SONIC your a dumbass i drive a truck and live in a house you can make as much money as you want you get paid buy the mile if you go to a company paid for CDL training you should look to spend 3 weeks of classes to get you cdl and then another 4 weeks riding with a trainer sometime more sometimes less depends on how well you catch on starting out while you are in training you make a set amount a week like $200 to $400 a week then when you get out on your own to can make your first year about $35,000 and it only goes up from there the more experience you get the more you can make and if you have a good clean record the whole time you drive you can make even more. If you have no felones or anything that you mite have spent some time in jail for and no big speeding tickets and are atleast 21 years old then you can be a truck driver . And like i say SONIC is a dumbass they are plenty of drivers who like the job make good money are home everynight and live in houses BUT it isnt just getting in a truck and driving from point A to point B it is work it is stressful all the time cause you cant just watch out for your self you have to watch for everyone else getting lost looking for were you pick up and drop off is a big part of it too keeping your logs up to date makeing sure you dont run out of driving time and makeing sure you are gonna be on time to your pickup/dropoff needless to say there is alot more to it then just getting in a truck and driving it is work and lot of it dirty , stressful, frustrating , iratating but it is a good respectable job if you are up to it plus with out us America Stops (95% of all thing in our lives are shipped by truck) so good luck with your decision if you have any more question fell free to email me at rjm_333@yahoo.com

How long does it take to become a truck driver?

Considering some of the driving skills I've seen by these truckers I wouldn't say very long. Maybe a few minutes of company polices?

I doubt it pays well. Most truckers live in Mobile homes.
