Is this something to be concerned about? I've been on the pill for almost 3 weeks. I've been on time for every pill except one during the 2nd week that I was 10 minutes late for.

How long should I use a backup method before I'm protected again? Is waiting a whole week necessary for a pill that's 20 minutes late? My little info sheet talks about 'missed pills', but I'm not sure if I should consider this pill to be 'missed'.

Stina: My partner and I are each other's one and only partner, and we're both clean (we got tested), so no worries about STDs. I understand the need for backup methods, and we take the necessary measures to be as protected as possible. Thanks!

Wow...if only every patient was as punctual as you apparently are. No, that is not considered a "missed" pill. Usually we tell patients to take their pills at "about" the same time each day. The more punctual you are, the more effective your birth control will probably be, but if you are within a couple of hours each day, you are probably very well protected.

Don't worry at all about 20 minutes... Missing pills a day or later is defintely a worry. The pills are to be a constant in your system so if you were to say, miss a day or two, the levels will diminish. But keeping it regular around the same time each day is the way to go. Great question...no worries :)

10 or 20 minutes is perfectly fine. Don't count it as a 'missed pill' unless you are 2-3 or more hours late with it.

You're fine. Don't freak. 20 minutes isn't going to do anything, BUT since this is your first cycle with it, you really should use another form of BC. Several years ago, when I first went on it, my doc told me to wait until I had finished out my first cycle with it before I had unprotected sex. Even after that you should still use condoms to protect against STDs. And btw, even though the stats say oh yeah 99.5% affective, you can still become pregnant while on hormonal BC.

You are fine. I paniced my first time on BC during daylight savings because i took mine and hour late. Just as long as its with in 3 hours +/- your ok. They have you take it at the same time so you will remember to take it everyday. The drug is active in your body for more then 24 hours.

20 minutes late is fine. it's when you wait 20 hours or someting, that's when it's bad. you don't ever want to miss it for a single day, ever.
