Walmart's subsidiaries include Sam's Club, and a group of stand-alone grocery stores called Neighborhood Market.
As for Lowes they are a completely separate and non-affilliated, publicly traded corporation, as far as I can see on any financials page. No connection to Wal-Mart at all.

The only connection is the style of doing business.

Wal-Mart created the big box concept and eliminated all the frills of doing business.

Lately, due to negative publicity, Wal-Mart is trying to improve on their image of cut-throaters and stingy employer.

The other big box stores like Lowes and Home Depot may have to follow the lead that Wal-Mart is making.

They will never get it to a point where shopping in these stores is a total pleasure, given all the noise and sloppy work areas they tend to have.

Some of the other establishments have finer working environments like J.C. Penney.

There was for awhile a rumor that one owned the other, but the rumor was clarified to be that there is no business relationship between the two. At least thats what I read.

Nope. Take a look at their registered agents - major competitors. If they were related, they'd use the same registered agent.
