First off, I would like to say that is a great question!!!! Its probably expanding into a bigger "everything", that would be my guess. You should read the works of Stephen Hawking. It might shed some light on the subject. Aside from that, its really interesting reading material

That's why the whole theory of the expanding universe is an enigma. There's no clear answer, but there's (at least some) proof that the universe is expanding.

It is expanding into the void. While difficult to conceptualize, mathematics makes it easy to understand.
The void is nothing. No up, no down. No energy. No molecules of nitrogen, oxygen, helium. Just nothing.
