This person would be in a different state, with no possible knowledge of any passwords. Might they be able to somehow view personal information on another's computer? And if so-what could they have access to?

Unfortunately yes....I know a guy who is getting master degrees in computer programming and this is what he said in a message to someone earlier

I've learned about all this with the degrees I'm currently working on. The MAC address is embedded on the nic card by the manufacturer so it never changes unless you change the card in the computer, and isp addresses are permanent as well after the first time you use one, unless your going to change you modem card, and your internet provider Everytime you go to any place on the internet (yahoo, etc) your addresses are labeled on the server you log into, unless your masking yours from the start through 3rd person neutral servers of course. . But once someone has access to a computer through its isp, and port addresses, you can actually enter and have total remote control of the system, all it has to do is stay online long enough. You can download the whole harddrive, set up viruses, erase the computer, lots of things can happen as long as the computer stays online long enough to finish it. You can even lock out the real user as they are sitting there. Why do you think that theres a billion dollar industry that works to protect government and businesses from hackers lol.

Pretty scary huh?

there are many ways a person can do this: (here are two common ways)
1. Use thier Wi-Fi router to access ALL thier computers that are not protected by a firewall, also if you do buy a router do not keep it at its original SSID the hack will think you have no security software.
2. Use the internet, If the hacker gets a hold of thier IP adress they could access and delete all the files they want to, or put a billion virues to where it is not fixable.

Someone with about High School level knowledge of computers can get onto your hard-drive from anywhere if you are connected to the internet and do not have a firewall or basic security precautions. Someone who know really what they are doing can get in anyway. Once onto your hard-drive an intruder has access to everything you have access to.

If you have a properly configured firewall and/or you're behind a router, so that no ports are open to the internet, it's unlikely someone could break in. I don't think there are bugs in the actual networking stack in Windows very often (at least not that we hear about). It's much more likely you would have to worry about worms/virus/keylogger type malware.

Well, of course. And it would only need to be mediocre, novice knowledge, not "advanced." And they could have access to it ALL. Sorry I'm being so pessimistic, but it's true. But you CAN keep yourself relatively safe. Get all the latest scanning programs and stuff.

It is as easy as cutting a hot knife through butter. If the person is on Mars (and they have a High Speed ADSL connection) they can hack you. It doesn't matter where you are, because the internet is ALL over.

Is it possible? The answer is yes.

No possible knowledge of passwords?
My answer is NO if he (or someone) didn't insert programs like remote control (more particularly self-made)...
