1/6 + 5/8 = 4/24 + 15/24 = 19/24
Do you see that the lowest common denominator is 24?

1/6+5/8 =(1/6)(4/4) +(5/8)(3/3) = 4/24 + 15/24 = 19/24

First, in order to add fractions, the denominators must be the same. Prime factor both numbers in the denominator:
6 = 2 x 3
8 = 2 x 2 x 2
Next find lowest common denominator (LCD) by looking at all prime numbers for both numbers and selecting the largest occurance of each prime number:
Only 2's and 3's are used in this example.
2's - Largest group is 3 of them (this occurs in the prime factoring of 8)
3's - Largest and only group is 1 of them (occuring in 6)
Take both of these largest groups (three 2's and one 3), multiply them together.
and this is your LCD.
LCD = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 24
1/6 = 1/2x3
5/8 = 5/2x2x2
To change 1/6 so that 24 is in the denominator, multiply it by 4/4.
It then becomes 4/24.
Change 5/8 by multiplying the it by 3/3. It becomes 15/24.
The values of the fractions haven't changed, but now you can add them since the denominators are the same.
Thus, 4/24 + 15/24 = 19/24
I'll be glad to answer additional questions.

well, first you gott get a common denominator
looks like 24 will work
1/6=4/24
5/8=15/24
4/24+15/24=19/24
doesn't look like we can reduce 19/24 any, so thats the answer
keep at it
