Classic rock, hands down... Born to be Wild set the mood for a generation... Who can resist putting your foot down on the highway when Radar Love comes on ???Who hasn't sat and marveled over Meddle in a fog of sorts ??? (I am not dissing modern rock, I listen to what I do ( even though the time for me to mellow out and like country has long come and gone ) because it moves me... I have hearing loss from too many Ted the Sledge concerts, but I have no regrets... and would go back and do it all over again if I could.. Just seemed to me that music meant a lot more back when. If I were 20 yrs older, I suppose I would think Lawerence Welk was ok...( thank God I am only 50'ish...) Does the younger generation even realize that Hendrix strung his guitar backwards cause he liked it better that way...or that the Star Spangled Banner was played with his teeth ??? THis is a hard question, a lot of newer stuff was good, too, but if I could go to a concert now, or one in 1969, you gotta know where I would be...( do not do any of the brown acid!)

I think classic rock is more enduring. There are a lot of current songs that I really like, but I doubt I will be listening to them in 20 years like I do the classics. Face it, Hinder and 3 Days Grace has nothing on Pink Floyd, Zeppelin and groups such as that.

Classic rock, because so called modern rock is pathetic for the most part, as everyone with a guitar is suddenly "in a band" and regional groups have taken to the net, cranked out a few tunes, broke up, reformed, etc etc. It is so watered down right now with way too much access for people to get music out there easily, and so there is a blandness, a sameness, with too much music out there to sort through. the cream that rises to the top can't be collected because now the bucket is too wide.
Also, there are not as many radio stations that play new rock music. I remember there were five or six during the advent of FM, but now of those six, one plays oldies,, four plays classic rock, and one sometimes will mix in a few newer songs.....I hope that makes sense.

In my opinion, hanging on to the past, and refusing to admit that anyone can do it better is for fuddy-duddies. Led Zeppelin was a great rock band, but since they've had their heyday, someone had exceeded their proficiency. There are better drummers than Bonzo, some people would rather shoot me in the face than agree, but it's just true.
I love a lot of old rock, especially old Prog Rock like Kansas, Emerson Lake and Palmer, King Crimson, etc. And there was a period of time in the late 60's to mid 70's when a lot of bands were making really exceptionally rocking music. But when artists like Wolfmother try to play the same style, they sound like HACKS.
Your favorite band can exist whenever in time, but contemporary will always offer a culmination of the best of the past and ultimately shape the future. The bar is constantly raised, Black Sabbath is by NO means the heaviest band in the world anymore, Kraftwork aren't blowing anyone's mind with their cutting edge electronics, and I could easily name 20 drummers who can out thrash Keith Moon. It's all about the modern rock.

Without a doubt, the "real" rock is classic! I have seen many bands from the Doors to Cream. Those guys rocked the house! There aren't too many that can do that anymore!
BTW....Rock On!

As far as sheer volume of good songs, definitely classic rock. It has also clearly stood the test of time.
New rock is alright. Most of it is the "flavor of the week" but there are diamonds in the rough.
