Yes rice socks are wonderful! A friend of mine actually makes them. She just started making "corn socks" she uses a tough material though, something like denim or heavy cotton for the corn sac, bag, pouch, whatever you want to call it. Then fills it with corn and permanently sews it closed.

But "corn" instead of rice, it holds the heat longer. You have to use "seed corn" from a feed & seed store, (be sure not to buy that PINK corn, it is treated with chemicals for rodent resistance in planting), not just a bag of corn from the grocery store, that kind is for popping.

They are microwavable, put it in for 2 minutes, it stays hot to warm for an hour. She is experimenting with freezing them but the downfall may be water content thus producing mold, so they are best for heat packs so far.

I have foot spurs and she made me a corn sock. I love it! Even though she calls them "socks" they actually look like tiny pillows.

The "sock" itself is made of linen (like a sheet) to hold the corn, then she makes slip covers of every sort of cute pattern (any material for fun) so the cover can be removed and washed. She covered mine with fleese, a baby lamb pattern.

Hers are like 5" x 10 " and she sells them for $5.00 right now to test market them.

Good luck to you on this!

If your talking about something you heat up in microwave like heating pad you can use dried corn (like what they feed to deer) It has a different texture but works the same.

As far as the outside, you can use almost any kind of material, I had a bunch of bandannas given to me once and I cut out a Teddy bear shape and sewed it and filled with rice and gave them to all the kids in the neighborhood one winter. I would think cotton would work the best and they can be any shape.

I hope this is what you are talking about and I hope this helps. Oh by the way you can put a few drops of scented oils so when they heat they smell good to.

If you are talking about the rice socks that you put in the microwave to lay around your neck, you can make fleece sleeves to put the socks in once they are heated. I also heard that you could use dry beans instead of rice.

Bird seed as a filler, rice kills birds. You can make something nice out of net material,it would be nice secure with a ribbon. Have the net match your wedding colors!

you can also put beans.. the little brown ones.. not baked beans but the hard small round ones (brown)... instead of a sock you can use a piece of fabric and put the beans/rice or w/e in the middle then pulle the fabric up and tie it like you would the sock... or you could get colorful socks at wal-mart.. they are fairly cheap

rice is pretty cheap. and you don't have to use a sock but something in that shape usually works the best. so people can wrap it around their necks and such

You can fill them will dried beans or barley and add a little lavender or chamomile and make them smell really good, like aromatherapy. I would use nicely colored tights or stockings in pretty colors and designs.
