Adding cereal to a bottle to help a baby sleep is a myth. Studies show that there is no change in the amount of time that a baby will sleep if cereal is put into the bottle. The presumption is that the extra calories from the cereal will help the baby feel full for a longer period of time, and thus not wake up so soon to be fed. Others suggest that the slight thickening of the formula that occurs when adding cereal will allow the formula to stay in the stomach longer and thus the baby won't have an empty stomach quite so soon. However, a teaspoon of infant cereal has only 5 calories. A 4-ounce bottle of formula has 80 calories, so an extra teaspoon of cereal is a negligible contribution. And there is no significant change in how quickly the stomach empties with that small an amount of cereal. While solid foods in general take longer to be digested, this is really not applicable to infant cereal.

Never put cereal in the bottle; it is a choking hazzard. At 6 mo you can start feeding cereal and/or other solids (NOT in a bottle), but that won't make the baby sleep through the night. My son is 16 mo and has been eating solids for months and months, but only just very recently started sleeping through the night.

Babies sleep through the night when they are developmentally ready to do so.

Its really not a good idea to put cereal in a bottle. And it is even worse to give the baby a bottle in a crib or propped at all.

If your child is having trouble sleeping, let them use a pacifier (recommened for preventing SIDS), play soft music in the room, let them cry for a little bit before going into the room when you hear them cry, often they fall back asleep, make sure their diaper is changed right before sleep so an uncomfortable diaper doesn't wake them up, and be prepared for some long nights. Its all part of being a parent.

Never.

Cereal doesn't go in a bottle. It goes on a spoon. The point of introducing solids is to get them used to different tastes and textures and teach them to eat another way besides drinking everything. Solids should not be introduced (ON A SPOON!) until 4-6 mos, per the AAP. (Preferably closer to 6 mos.) Breastmilk or formula is ALL they need for the first 6 mos. They can't digest it any earlier than that. AND feeding solids too early increases the risks of allergies, diabetes, respiratory illness, obesity, etc. etc. It's not worth it!

Cereal helping them "sleep through the night" is an old wive's tale.

The ONLY time cereal should be put in a bottle is under a doctor's advice for a baby with reflux.

I know that you are a Mom and the decision really is yours but why would you want to do that? There is a reason that a baby wakes up at night and that is because they are little, their tummy's are little and can't hold much. Your baby needs the nutrition and rice formula is not going to give your baby the nutrition that it needs or deserves. There are so many complications that can arise by putting rice cereal in your baby's bottle. Even if the Dr says it's ok remember they are not nutritionalists. Personally, I would never consult my own baby's Dr on nutrition.

There's a song on the radio called "Let them be little".

Since I have no idea how old your child is, I am estimating here. You can start them around 6 months. (I personally would not put cereal in thier bottle to sleep) but formula. If your baby is teething, then thier sleep pattern will be all out of wack. It is hard to get them to sleep through the night when they are teething, without giving them some infant tylonol or gripe water or ambesol. I hope this helped a little.

do not put cereal in the bottle, if you give the baby 1 or 2 ounces more than usual before bed that might help, around 5 months you can try to give him cereal but spoon feed it to him. not in a bottle

You shouldn't put cereal in your baby's bottle. It's a choking hazard. Doctors dont reccommend it anymore. When your baby is 4-6 months old, you can start him on stage 1 cereal once a day. Start slow. It's a new taste and texture. He may not like it at first, or if he's like my 6 month old - he wont like it at all. Good luck and have fun with your baby!

my doctor told me to use a spoon to feed my baby and I started her on rice cereal at 6 weeks to help her feel fuller and now she is 15 weeks old and taking the spoon really good but I made the cereal like the box says for baby's first cereal feeding: Mix 1 tbsp cereal with 4-5 Tbsp warm breast milk , formula or water. But you might want to ask your doctor first he or she would know more about what to have you do or when to start your baby on cereal.

You shouldn't put the cereal in his bottle but you can mix some rice cereal with some formula - so it's a little bit thick - and spoon feed it to him before you put him to bed. Start with 3 Tbls of cereal.
