Good possibillity the first answerer is correct. The pilot light may have gone out. You may check to see if it's on by taking off the metal inspection cover, below the gas valve on the side of the unit, and looking into the opening. You should see a small blue flame in there, if not, then turn off the valve on the top of the control box and wait five minutes. While you're waiting, you could go get a fireplace match or one of the butane matches they sell for lighting barbeques and have it ready. After five minutes, turn the valve back to pilot position, push the red button down and hold it while playing the flame from whatever source you've chosen, over the pilot lite frame. It should relight with the small blue flame I mentioned earlier. If it does light, continue to hold the red button down for approx. 30 - 60 seconds, to allow the thermocouple to heat up so the gas valve will stay open when you release it. After you've released the red button, you should still have a flame visible. If you do, then turn the valve control to ON and the burner should light, if the flame doesn't continue after you release the red button you may need a thermocouple replaced. They do occasionally go bad, but not usually this soon. If you are handy enough to tackle the job yourself, email me and I'll walkl you thru it. Good luck.

Check to see if the pilot is lit- on the newer water heaters there is a sealed combustion chamber and there is an observation window you can look through to see if it is lit (you may just about have to stand on your head to see it ).If it is one of the newer models, there is a piezo lighter that relights the pilot. There are instructions for re-lighting the pilot posted on the water heater-follow them explicitly so you don't blow yourself up! If you get the pilot re-lit but it doesn't stay lit after a couple of attempts, there is a problem with the controls and you'll need to call a service tech to diagnose the problem. P. S,-being a plumber ,I hate water heaters in the attic and wish they'd change the code so it wouldn't be allowed! Think what would happen should it spring a leak, not to mention the hassle of working on it and, even worse having to replace it. And by all means call a professional if you are in doubt about one iota !!

If you mean the burner does not ignite, it could be a bad thermocouple, someone set the control to "Off", the temperature/gas control is not working, or the gas has been turned off. If it is a high efficiency unit, there are additional checks to make a diagnosis.

Check the pilot light, check the settings to make sure it is turned to a level that will heat the water, check the inlet and outlet valves, make sure they are open. Who knows, maybe one of your kids messed with it.
After that, I don't know, call somebody qualified to service it.
