An answer to some of the answers :

1. Greek civilization did not die. It's the cradle of the european civilization and the western civilization that followed.

2. There was Education in ancient Greece.

3. The rights of the State were above the human rights. The person was a cell of the city state. I don't think that's wrong.

4. Individuality: the greeks came up with the idea of individuality, the civilizations before them had unknown artist that were following a pattern (like in Egypt). Greek artists create something unique in every form of art, (Theater, Sculptures, Architecture ect.)

5. There were not arenas in greek cities, the greeks never participated in the blood thirst show of gladiators even as citizens of roman empire.

6. About the wars... the ancient greeks lived by the sword because they tried to live in freedom and equality. They realized that the wars is in the nature of men and they came up with a wise sentence for war "Only the dead have see the end of the war"

7. It's funny to read some in some of the answers that "the greeks were barbarians". Barbarian is a word created by greeks for all the other nations that spoke other languages. They called them barbarians because the other languages at that time sounded to them as "bar - bar - bar". It meant a person that speaks another language, not a savage.

Too many. If you read the Iliad this is not a poem which conveys any morality. The Characters are cruel in the extreme and have no conscience or mercy. I don't think that any culture which murders and pillages its way over a large portion of the Globe (as Alexandria did) can claim admiration for such acts. On the one side the Greeks were barbarians who enslaved anyone who was not Greek (something even lauded by Socrates) and on the other they gave us the foundation for all our knowledge. So I would admire them as the founders of Philosophy but I would not admire them for their shameless subjugation of other peoples.

I just have to remind the Mestopholes guy that the Romans, Gauls, Mongols, Huns, Turks, Persians and gosh, I could go on and on did the same things as the Greeks as a matter of fact the Roman Empire was much larger and subjugated many more people than the Greeks.

So don't knock' em so hard..

it really is in uncomplicated words actual with some greeks. maximum human beings are extremely pleasant. inspite of the undeniable fact that it truly is actual that we desire our personal type at hand out with each now and then. different greeks are more effective common to narrate to, possibly thats why. My suited associates are greeks like me, yet thats no longer because i reject each individual else i meet. adapt the way of existence as your human being

They never unified in the way that would have made them much greater. Their Classical era was great, but through war they weakened themselves and allowed one power after another to rule until the Macedonians and later Confederacies held sway until Roman Conquest
