for normal driving, leave it on. OD lowers the engine RPM at highway speeds to increase fuel mileage. Turn it off only if you are towing a trailer and stay at speeds lower than 50 MPH or are in extremely hilly country if it constantly shifts in and out of OD

Only when all of your driving is in town turn OD off light will go on in dash. Just saves gasoline when above 40 mph when light is off OD on. some cars you have to shift back to three or two on the shifter to turn the OD off.

Yes, O/D is Overdrive. What its for, is to help gas mileage, and save your engine, to let it rev in lower rpm ranges. You can keep it on, as it usually won't engage till about 30 or higher, MPH.

it is an extra gear - leave it on. that is why it defaults on. if your car is struggling up a hill or you are towing, turn it off.
