I learned how to take minutes in a college technical writing class.

What we were taught to do was take notes of the topics that were discussed and any important decisions that were made - including to table the issue for a while (wait to decide what to do).

Make sure you have the date and the place you're meeting on your minutes, as well as a list of who is there and who is missing. That also goes on your minutes - at the top - when you submit them.

I suggest typing your official minutes, but take notes however you prefer. Doing a bold or underlined subject for each topic and then bullet points for each point decided, etc., is one way to go that many people seem to prefer.

At the end, it's common to put, "respectfully submitted, (enter your name here)"...

Use a font that is clear enough to read, and don't let it get too small or big. Use clear, simple sentences, and make sure your spelling's accurate or you could have people biting your head off.

I like to have one spiral-bound notebook for each 'committee' I'm on, so no matter where I am, if someone wants to know what happened at the last meeting, I can pull that notebook out, check my notes, and let them know - plus, I don't have to search for loose papers. Your school should be able to provide you with one, or reimburse you.

Good luck!

The agenda should be given to you. It is a list of things to be considered at the meeting. The minutes are a record of what happened at the meeting included a brief description of discussion of questions and, most importantly, a record of votes and their decisions, who made motions, etc.
