You don't need a vet to trim nails. Get either heavy toenail clippers or the toenail clippers for dogs. Get in GOOD light. A lot of times you can see a darker area where the quick is. *Usually* you can trim a little ways up from the point and in stages shorten it. Go slowly, don't stress your bunny and don't stress yourself. It's just trimming nails...not surgery. Have some quickstop on hand just in case...but usually isn't a problem if you get in good light. Find a rabbit show, go to the show (without your bunny) and ask someone (who isn't busy getting ready for a class) to show you how to do it. Most will be happy to show you how to trim nails.
The black nails are a little trickier than the light colored...but they need done.

If you have a humane society in your area that adopts out small companion animals take the bunny there. An adoption counselor or vet tech will show you how to trim bunny's nails.
Of course a vet would do it too. That would cost you something.
Cats are easy to do because the quick is pink just like human nails. If you just were to clip a TINY bit off the ends on a regular basis you could keep up with it.

The vet will do it. Check out this site for a vet recommendation. You can't ignore this problem because it will get worse. The trick to black nails is to take a flash light and put it under the nail then you will be able to see where you should cut because you stop at the part that is cloudy.

You can get a tool to do it yourself but your grandma is right, being his nails are black you cant see where the vein ends. Have the vet do it for you and ask his opinion and guidance about doing it your self in the future. It only takes a few minutes at the vets and shouldnt cost you much.

Well if the nails are black Id bring it to a pet store.... Nails if white.. lay bunny on its back.... and u will see nails..... u will see a pink line 1/2 way up dont cut that far.... cut beneath that... Use trimmers for rabbits or dogs..
and get some anti bleed powder just incase.... Flour also works...

Vets can usually clip rabbit's nails for about $10 dollars. And just so you know, my vet told me that cornstarch stops the bunny's nail from bleeding (in case you ever do it your self or he breaks a nail), so you might want to keep some on hand just in case. Good luck!

I would definitely take him to a vet. My vet only charges $10 to trim my dogs nails when he needs it and I'm sure rabbits would be that or less to do. It's little to pay for the professional job they do. You could ask your vet to teach you how to file the nails in between trimmings so you won't have to hassle going into the vets office quite as often.
Good Luck to you and your bunny.

Take a flashlight and shine it directly at the nails while you're trimming. The veins will show up.
