He was under a certain time line that was established for outcomes such as that. His advisors did well to tell him to contest what they knew was wrong, but also do conceed when the time was right. Sadly, he did, which shows that Al Gore has class. I think Americans should've revolted. Given that Georgie's brother in Florida helped his brother with all the shananagans that took place in that state (hanging chads), that alone should have sent a message. Besides, Al Gore won the popular vote and that means he was the people choice.

What motivated him is quite clear. The Supreme Court issued an opinion that closed the door on any more recounting after the Democratically controlled Florida Supreme Court had ruled it could be counted and recounted until the answer came out in Gore's favor.
When asked about this the following year at a budget hearing in Congress, Associate Justice Anthony M. Kennedy responded that for the Court, what it came down to in the end was who did you want to decide the outcome of a federal election--a state court or a federal court? The answer to all reasonable people, of course, was that it was a federal matter and required a ruling in a federal court.
Once that ruling was handed down, Gore's campaign had exahusted all practical options save to drag the country through a futile struggle to capture an office he had lost.

Al Gore was not the ideal opponent for the GOP money machine. He knew there were issues that had to be handled immediately, but wrongly assumed that Bush's team would follow through. All Dubya cared about was getting in the big chair and paying off his cronies.I doubt that he even thought about terrorists for the first 8 months. His ultra right buddies did and stayed quiet to take full advantage of what was coming.
Al Gore did the wrong thing for the right reason, but now he's doing right, staying out of office while his ex- running mate slowly humiliates himself toadying to the White House.

I don't think Gore "gave" the election of 2000 away. He realised it was going to be a long- drawn out, divisive battle, - with no certainty that he would win in the end. He's a nice guy who loves his country- & hated to see it being polerized more & more as the weeks & recounts went on. I don't believe he wanted to quit. I think he just thought it was the best think to do under the circumstances. And those are just a couple of reasons why to this day- when someone asks me what I think of one of Bush's policys- I always say, "I voted for Gore." -And they understand.

Once the Supreme Court ruled on the Florida recount, it was all over. Gore didn't have any alternative but to continue to drag it out in the courts, and the Supreme Court had already shot down his best argument for a win.

I don't know what motivated Gore to challenge, or to stop. Probably utter hopelessness.
I did not vote for either of them in 2000.
I think Gore's challenges went on far too long, and were unjustified.
I know others disagree.

When the supreme court said, he really had no choice but it still is a * in the history books as Bush became the first president to be appointed by the supreme court without winning the election.

To protect the system. Around the world the U.S system was taken a beating because the stolen elections, U.S.A. was looking ugly around the world so Gore had to concede.

TT. The SCOTUS said he lost. Where else could he go? Dan Rather or the NY Times can't overrule the SC.
