A lot of the time it's slowly learned behavior. They start small, like a child stealing a candy bar. Children don't understand consequences and don't see any harm in it. Assuming they get away with it this it becomes an easy way to get what they want without working for it and just grows with the person. Considering the "me" attitude of many people, especially in this country, it's easy to see why someone would rather take from others than work themselves.
It's also worth noting that quite often the people doing this also have addictions, hard drug use being the most mentioned one, and use stolen money or money from selling stolen goods to pay for that.
The real key to the mindset is that they are, one way or another, entitled to what they want regardless of what it costs others.

they don't have any money, they are low line weird o's!
they just think it is "cool" to steel and go on a shopping spree, but to get them, just tell the credit card company to ask the place's where the card was used online, find the shipping address and follow it, but with cops!
Good Luck!

Lots of reasons, but I think most people steal to support a drug habit..... When you turn your will and your life over to crack, meth, coke, snow, girl, boy, ice, you become a whore of the drug. Robbing, stealing and even killing just to stay high, get high. I'm sorry for your loss, have been victimized by my own children because of addiction, its NOT a nice feeling. I'll keep you both in my thoughts...

Because some people prefer not to be productive citizens. They don't want to get up every morning and go to work and make honest money like the rest of us. Instead they prefer to take from innocent people.

Maybe for the thrill of it? Sometimes it's a mental disorder, I've heard.
I think we've all stole something in our lives, although, my mother claims she only stold something once, a $20 from her dad when she was little, and finally confested to him when he was on his deathbed, she was in her forties by then, and he said he knew.

They feel they are owed something by someone.
They got a raw deal somewhere, and are looking to even up the score.
There are alot of people like this in the world.
