If it should be

If it should be I grow frail and weak,
And pain should wake me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.
You will be sad, I understand
Don’t let your grief then stay your hand,
For this day more than all the rest,
Your love and friendship stand the test.
We’ve had so many happy years,
What is to come will hold no fears,
You’ll not want me to suffer, so,
When the time comes, please let me go,
I know in time you too will see,
Its kindness what you do to me,
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I’ve been saved,
Do not grieve it should be you,
Who has to decide this thing to do,
We’ve been so close, we two, these years.
Don’t let your heart hold any tears,
And I will wait for you at the pearly gate my master my friend my life’s companion till the end

That's sweet. Why is it that we can give that gift to our animal friends who are suffering but not our human ones? Doesn't make sense. This isn't quite a poem, but I love the idea of it...

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Awaa Kimmie I was just about to tell Omnigomni about Rainbow Bridge, but when I got to the end of the answers I found you had beaten me to it, but as my copy is a touch different I will post it anyway.

Rainbow Bridge

There is a bridge connecting Heaven and Earth. It is called Rainbow Bridge because of it's many colours.

Just this side of the Rainbow Bridge there is a land of meadows, hills, and valleys with lush green grass. When a beloved pet dies, the pet goes to this place.

There is always food and water, and warm spring weather. The old and frail animals are young again. Those that have been maimed are made whole again, and they play together all day.

But there is one thing missing. They are not with their special person who loved them on Earth.

Each day they run and play until the day comes when one suddenly stops playing and looks up. The nose twitches, the ears are up, the eyes are staring, and this one suddenly runs from the group.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend meet, you cling together in joyous reunion never to be parted again. Your face is kissed again and again, your hands caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the eyes of your trusting pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross the Rainbow Bridge together, never again to be separated.

your poem that you have shared with us is beautiful and also the rainbow bridge story!

I have the ashes here of my baby.. my little spaniel who sadly died almost 4 years ago now.. and he was only 14 months old!

When I go.. he will go with me....our ashes scattered over the water where we both love(loved) to be. I'm now going to copy these poems onto my notepad and then print out ..so that they can also accompany my baby's footsteps along side mine's..6 footprints in the sand.. almost walking hand in hand ..

As said above..only true animals lovers will get this thread and i hope no twats decide to come along with silly comments.

xxthank you once again for sharing your poemxx (and rainbow bridge too to the other 2 people) xx

I could barely read it through my tears. Only a true animal lover, would understand the depth of that poem. Thank you for sharing that. I'm so sorry for your loss. Loving pets are easy, losing them is heartbreaking. But, we have to think of all the good years we had, and how happy we made them. Thanks again. Ok, I need to find my tissues........

WOW. That's just wonderful.

I always have difficulty consoling the missus when we lose one of our little friends but that poem will really help.
