We have thicker skin. No joke. We do. All of the days we spend in the wide open spaces has allowed us to develop a natural outdoor appearance. Only the couch potatoes have the thin skin that makes them a natural target for them.

Among other things, they avoided camping near stagnant water. They also used repellents, at least where people weren't moving around that much. Why do you think tobacco became sacred?

In addition to the answers given (animal grease and certain herbs), they kept campfires in lodges - the smoke deters mosquitos.
